Embryo adoption in Greece
Assisted reproduction using donor embryos is a process that allows couples or women facing fertility issues to have a child through the use of embryos created by other donors or another couple. It is preferred when a couple or a woman cannot conceive naturally and other methods, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), are not feasible or have not been successful.
Embryo Donation Process
- Embryo Creation: Embryos are created through IVF, where eggs and sperm are combined in a laboratory environment.
- Embryo Donation: Unused embryos from couples who have undergone IVF (with donor eggs and sperm) can be given to others who wish to become parents. These embryos may come from anonymous or known donors.
- Recipient Preparation: The woman receiving the embryos usually undergoes preparation, such as hormonal therapy, to prepare her endometrium, ensuring that the uterine environment is suitable for implantation.
- Implantation: The embryos are implanted into the woman’s uterus, and if all goes well, pregnancy may result. Success depends on the recipient’s age and the quality of the embryos.
Legal and Ethical Issues
This process is accompanied by legal and ethical issues, such as donor anonymity, parental responsibility, and psychological impacts. Given that this is an emotionally charged process, it is important for interested parties to be fully informed and to have the support they need.
